The Reads Award of Excellence Committee, along with the READS Executive Board, is very pleased to announce that Sophie Smith of Nashua Public Library is the winner of the 2012 Award of Excellence.
The READS award of excellence recognizes outstanding contributions by a library staff member who has been instrumental in improving library service to adults. Smith, a reference librarian at Nashua Public Library, was nominated by library director Jen Hinderer. Hinderer cited Smith’s work in developing and maintaining Nashua’s world languages collection and her development of reading materials directed at adult new readers, both those learning to read for the first time and ESL students new to reading English. Her efforts have resulted in large increases in the circulation of books in Hindi, Chinese and Spanish. In addition, she has reached outside of the library, meeting with students and teachers at The Adult Learning Center to determine how best to serve them. Hinderer wrote in her nomination: “Sophie is a worthy recipient because of her continued commitment to improving the customer experience in the library. In every decision and change we make as an institution Sophie is a strong advocate for the patron, she handles daily interactions with the public with grace, understanding, and good humor. Sophie actively reaches out to the community to gain feedback on how we can better serve them and is a great example of Excellence in service to adults.”
Nomination materials for the 2013 Award of Excellence will be available soon on the READS website. For more information on this award, please go to http://www.nhlibrarians.org/reads/index.html.
