READS conference registration deadline one week away

What if there was a way to improve your library skills, work towards a certificate in librarianship and perhaps earn more money doing what you love to do? Come find out how at the READS Conference to be held at Franklin Pierce University, Rindge, NH, on October 25, 2013. Registration check in begins at 8:30. Enjoy the continental breakfast beginning at 8:30.

The morning session will be presented by Gerry Deyermond, co-chair of the Massachusetts Library Association’s (MLA) Paralibrarian Section, along with Karen Horn and Lori Salotto of the Paralibrarian Career Development Committee will describe the voluntary program they developed to formally recognize paralibrarians who go above and beyond their regular duties.

The Massachusetts program has been operating since 2006. Not everyone wants to (or is able to) obtain an advanced degree to further their library career. This presentation will outline the process used by MLA to implement such a program. The two hour program will feature a presentation, a panel discussion and a question & answer period.

After the presentation, you will be given an anonymous survey about starting such a program in NH. Be on the ground level as we explore library certification in New Hampshire! This is not just for library administration. We want to hear from all library staff at all levels.

After lunch Denise van Zanten, Library Director at Manchester City Library will present a program that focuses on dealing with the many relationships library staff need to juggle to keep staff, coworkers, trustees and patrons happy! Be prepared for an interactive question and answer session as part of the presentation to share “your” challenges and learn some pointers.

And we will wrap it all up with the FAMOUS 30 books in 30 minutes presented by Mary H. White, Director of the Howe Library, Hanover, NH and two colleagues Heather Backman, Programming and Outreach Librarian; and Gary Burton, Youth Services Assistant. Get some great ideas for your book group’s next book!
